Greek Spotlight: Gods’ Restaurant

Greek Movie News

Located in the shadow of the Acropolis, Gods’ Restaurant (or Oinomagireio tontheon) is one of Athens’ most recognizable family-run eateries. Known for its proximity to the New Acropolis Museum and its lively, welcoming atmosphere, it bridges the gap between a traditional Greek taverna and a modern tourist staple.

History & Origins

The restaurant is a multi-generational project led by the Falias family. While the current location on Makrygianni Street has been a fixture since 2000, the family’s culinary roots go back much further.

  • Legacy: The patriarch, Mr. George (Giorgos Falias), began his career in the restaurant business in 1963.

  • Philosophy: George and his wife Maria founded the restaurant with the intent to treat every customer like a guest in their own home, emphasizing “mama’s kitchen aromas” and traditional Greek hospitality (philoxenia).

What Makes It Unique?

  • Location: Situated on the pedestrianized Makrygianni Street, it offers diners views of the Parthenon and is directly across from the Acropolis Museum.

  • The “Barkers”: A unique (and sometimes polarizing) quirk is the friendly, energetic staff out front who greet passersby with humor, compliments, and invitations to dine—a traditional Athenian practice that they’ve turned into a bit of a performance.

  • Open Kitchen: Unlike many tourist spots, they encourage guests to walk inside and look at the glass display cases of fresh, daily-cooked dishes before ordering.

Menu Highlights

The menu focuses on authentic Greek recipes with a few modern twists.

  • Signature Dolmades: “Papa George’s specialty,” these are grapevine leaves stuffed with ground beef and rice, served with a rich egg-lemon (avgolemono) sauce.

  • Lamb Kleftiko: Slow-cooked lamb with vegetables and cheese, traditionally prepared in a pot.

  • Vegan Moussaka: A popular modern addition featuring coconut béchamel and mushroom mince.

  • Caramelized Octopus: Served over Santorini fava bean spread.

  • Complimentary Treats: Many guests note the tradition of receiving a small complimentary dessert, like Greek yogurt with honey or fresh fruit, at the end of the meal.

Customer Feedback & Events

  • Feedback: Generally very high (often 4.5+ stars). Travelers frequently praise the generous portions and the staff’s warmth. While some find the street-side “hustle” intense, most agree the food quality back it up.

  • Significant Events: * It is a frequent host for Rick Steves’ Greece tours, often serving as the “welcome meal” or “farewell dinner” for tour groups.

    • The restaurant holds regular Greek nights featuring live music and traditional dancing.

    • In 2023, they notably expanded their culinary team to include Executive Chef Panagiotis Poulis and Senior Chef Giorgos Tselementes (a name synonymous with Greek gastronomy history).
